SAVING OUR TASSIE DEVILS AND REDUCING OZONE POLLUTION
|
25 Oct 2010
Pollution is destroying our environment and Devil Facial Tumour Disease is wiping out our Tasmanian devils. The Gillard Labor Government and Australian institutions are working together to save our nation by setting up research programs that could give us ways to reduce atmospheric pollution and find a cure for Devil Facial Tumour Disease.
Announcing the $318 million funding for 931 new research projects under the Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Projects scheme, Innovation Minister, Senator Kim Carr, said the projects would boost investigator-driven research in Australia.
“The Government recognises the importance of supporting excellent fundamental research by individuals and teams to nurture the talents of Australia's most promising early-career and established researchers,” Senator Carr said.
“The Australian Government is committed to supporting this research which will result in the development of new ideas, the creation of jobs, economic growth, and an enhanced quality of life in Australia.
“This $318 million investment in fundamental research also supports international collaboration—in this scheme alone the Australian Government is supporting 1178 instances of international collaboration with researchers in 72 countries.
“The welcome news with Discovery funding for 2011 is the success rate for female applicants (24 per cent)—this is the first time over the last five years that the success rate is the same as that for males,” Senator Carr said.
The Discovery Projects scheme supports high-quality fundamental research that builds Australia’s knowledge, research capacity and international competitiveness.
